Integrated environmental protection
Around the world, Bosch is dedicated to a responsible environmental policy. The aim of conserving resources accompanies our products through their entire life cycle. We want to show you how we design and manufacture our goods in an eco-friendly way. Production, use and disposal, all follow eco-friendly principles. You can also learn how Bosch technology ensures that products by other manufacturers become more eco-friendly, too.

Incorporated environmental protection

Environmental protection is an important theme in Bosch innovations. We develop products that incorporate environmental considerations from the outset.

Eco-friendly production
Bosch protects the environment at the manufacturing stage. Resources are used as sparingly as possible in our plants.

For example: Several automatic lathes in our Bamberg plant have been converted to make the usual cooling lubricants during cutting unnecessary. The benefits are clear: We save lubricants which are difficult to prepare in an eco-friendly way and are normally needed for drilling, milling and turning. This way, considerably less pollutants are emitted into the environment.

Our products in use: eco-friendly and effective
For their entire lifespan, our products stand for high efficiency and low consumption of valuable resources. Here are three examples:

Economic cars for cleaner air
the automotive industry, we find it especially important to keep developing effective environmental protection measures.

High pressure direct injection in diesel engines can reduce consumption by up to 30%. The systems are called Common Rail, for instance. In spark ignition engines, the electronic gasoline direct injection system known as DI-Motronic can save up to 15% of fuel consumption. It also cuts emissions significantly.

Those little household chores
Every day, many people work in their household. To reduce energy consumption as much as possible here, we keep improving the efficiency of our household appliances.

Since 1990, we have reduced the average energy and water consumption of our household appliances by 50%. More than three quarters of appliances produced by Bosch in Germany qualify for the European Energy Label's "A" energy efficient rating.

Environmental protection in your garden
Using our gardening tools also means conserving resources. Our silent shredder's special operating method reduces noise pollution. It received the "Blue Angel" environmental seal.

Save on packaging – protect the environment
We ensure that products by other manufacturers also reach consumers in a more eco-friendly way. Bosch packing technology saves materials while reducing energy consumption and waste volumes.

For example: Our bag form and seal machine makes additional cardboard packaging redundant. The bag's rigidity and reinforced, sealed crimps allow it to stand upright by itself and ensure that the content stays in perfect condition.

Safe disposal of old appliances

Good design means easy recycling
Our products are designed to be easily disposable and recyclable at the end of their useful life. The Bosch rotary hammer is an example. It has easily dismounted plug-in connectors, one standard screw size and clear labeling on plastic parts. At the end of its useful life, it can be simply disassembled into its components and then recycled.

No charge for returned goods, comprehensive recycling
We have developed a high-performance take-back system for our power tools. Consumers and retailers can simply return their old appliances free of charge. Our recycling center in Willershausen organizes the logistics, sorting and recovery of electrical appliances, thereby ensuring that more than 560 tons of old power tools are fed back into the raw material cycle every year. Leading manufacturers have also teamed up with this system, together representing more than 80% of market volume.
The Bosch Environment Report
The latest Bosch Environment Report 2003/2004 entitled "Global Responsibility" provides an extensive overview of Bosch environmental activities. The 50-page document presents the Bosch environment philosophy and cites examples, facts and figures.
